I can’t believe it has taken me this long, but I finally volunteered in my son’s kindergarten class last week. It was so much fun. There was still snow on the ground from the big snowfalls over the holidays, but the day was above zero, mild and comfortable. Here we are, at the beginning, convening on one of the stump circles…
Then heading out to the fields…
Where we got busy giving thanks to the specific gifts of the four directions (for example, thanks to the East for new beginnings) and pretending to be hunters…
Making a (snow)fire for cooking…
And eventually heading back again…
For music and stories in our circle…
And when a child’s gaze wanders skyward, and it does, the child will see this…
We went inside for snacktime (the little fingers needed to eat snacks can get cold). The senior kindergarteners worked on letters, while the juniors worked on collage. We convened one last time for storytelling, told with props brought home by our kindie teacher from a trip to Africa. This week’s story was “The Elephant King”, in which animals on the African savanna learn to accept their unique physical characteristics, and was followed by a discussion about what makes each of us special.
All in a day in the life of our kindie kids.
